U-Md. Sued for Not Providing Captioning at Sporting Events

University of Maryland was sued for not providing captioning in their sport games. The National Association of the Deaf filed a lawsuit against the University of Maryland for not providing open captioning announcements during the school’s on-campus sports games. Two deaf sports patrons and Terrapins fans attended the university’s sporting events and were upset they could not understand what was said during the games, making them feel excluded from the experience.

Helen Okobokekeimei is an aspiring multimedia journalist (MMJ)/reporter at the University of Maryland. Her diverse journalism experience has inspired her to take on topics and issues people are interested in. She is inquisitive about the world everyone live in and the way people’s lives has changed, allowing her to present pertinent information to the public in order for them to be informed. In order to prepare for a multi-platform digital world, she aspires to master all forms of journalism and look to network with others who can assist her in that endeavor. Upon graduation from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, she intends to enter the journalism profession. She is a diligent, persistent, and dynamic individual who is driven to succeeding her goals.
